I just found out some freaking amazing news! My best friend is giving my daughter a best friend! When she found out she was pregnant... literally the day I delivered my little girl, she immediately started asking questions about what items she would need. I didn't really have an answer for her yet, because I hadn't even gotten the chance to try anything out. Let me tell you though, now that my daughter is almost 3 months old (holy crap.....) I definitely have a different perspective on what is necessary and what isn't. BUT it's important to keep in mind, that what was a necessity for me, might not be a necessity for you and vice versa. It's important to analyze your lifestyle to help determine what you absolutely need. Also, keep in mind that your baby might not like certain things and might love other things. I suggest keeping your receipts and DO NOT throw away any boxes. In this post, I'll talk about what I absolutely needed and provide you some dupe alternatives for those of us on a budget!
Diaper Pale - I freaking love my diaper genie. This was given as a gift to me from my friend Jackie, who SWORE by it. Let me tell you, diapers are nasty. They are nasty fresh and even nastier stale. I know that a lot of people say that it's easier to just toss the diaper in the trash, but trust me that trash will stink. Not to mention attract flies. There are many different diaper pales for many different budgets. It's important to look at the price of the actual pale, but also the inserts. I love my Diaper Genie. It's the original and you cant go wrong. Each insert lasts me about 1 month. So for about $100 you can get the pale as well as a year supply of inserts. Trust me, your nose will thank you.
DUPE - This isn't really a dupe, just discounted heavily. Your welcome.
Travel System - Obviously, you need a car seat and a stroller. Most of the time, these are sold separately... unless you do it the smart way and buy a travel system. It saves you a huge headache and a pretty penny. I have the Baby Jogger Citi Mini GT. I do love it, but I wish it was a little bit more light weight. I forget that I have a huge tubby baby that probably doesn't help. It was also just a bit hard to get used to.. but once i got it, it is supper easy. I wanted something I could use as an every day stroller, but also something that I could use as a jogger. I wish it had more storage, but LOVE that it is easy to maneuver.
TIP - You cannot use your Buy Buy Baby coupons on this item, BUT you will get a registry completion coupon a couple months before your due date and you CAN use it on this item because its a percentage off your entire purchase.
DUPE - Here is another jogger system that is safe and wont break the bank!
Tub - Okay so I got two tubs and this one quickly became a lifesaver. I also have this one, but have not used it yet. Amelia was born 8lb 2oz which is considered a "big" baby. I quickly found out that it was super hard to support her in the tub with a sling. So the Angel Care tub quickly became a lifesaver. Not only that, but it's super easy to clean and hypoallergenic. It has holes in it as well, which makes it easy to keep good water level without baby's head going under. Its also only $25.00. You just can't beat that. She is now over 13lb and we still use this tub.
TIP - Amazon has it on sale for $19.99.
Diaper Bag - Who the hell knew that a diaper bag could be such a decision? They literally have everything from designer purses to backpacks. I'm a simple girl and all I wanted was something that was practical and cheap. Some of these bags are upwards of $100... I don't even spend that much on myself. Let alone something to carry around diapers. I have this Skip Hop bag, which I love... but it is a bit pricey.
DUPE - I also have this bag which is affordable as hell and practical. I call it the Marry Poppins bag because it is bottomless. You can fit SO MUCH in it and still have room.
Swaddles - I use these for everything. I use them as blankets, burp clothes, carseat covers, towels, wipes, breastfeeding covers... everything. You literally cannot have enough. They can be pricey though. Also be sure to make sure that you get the square ones as opposed to the rectangular ones. They are easier to wrap and fold!
TIP - Ross & Marshals always have swaddles on sale. Amazon also has some, but they are still a bit expensive.
Rock n Play - Okay so this might be the most valuable piece of equipment I own. I have a MomaRoo... but get real, who wants to spend $250 on a kids toy they will grow out of. Amelia doesn't even like hers! She LOVES her Rock n Play. She has slept in it since day one. It's $119. Which is half the cost of a MomaRoo. It's still pricey, but it doubles as a bassinet. Your basically getting a rocker AND a bassinet for $119.00. Thats freaking amazing.
DUPE - This is the same brand, same item, different design for less than $100.
Socks - If you think you lose socks now... just wait. The fact that baby socks are smaller than the palm of your hand, makes the lose-ability substantially greater. Add a baby that loves to kick them off, or dogs that love to eat them.... you are bound to go through socks more than diapers. My tip: stock up on bulk from amazon. This right here is everything. Essentially a buck a pair. Can't beat that.
Baby Carrier - So this one was a must for me. But some people don't think so. If you plan on getting anything done with two hands, you WILL need a baby carrier. There are so many different types of carriers and they span every price point. If you go to a Buy Buy Baby, you can actually try them on and see what works best for you. I myself went through like 4 carriers before I settled on the Baby K'tan. It's on the cheaper end of the spectrum for sure. Make sure you get the right size. I actually sized up because Amelia is such a big baby, but that was personal preference.
DUPE - Here is something a bit cheaper. These say one size fits all, but I am a 10/12 and some of these Amazon finds didn't fit. Make sure you can exchange!
ITEMS I DID NOT USE
Humidifier (not yet)
Changing Table (we use whatever surface is available) She hasn't transitioned to her room yet, so we rarely change her in there. We also got a table that is a dresser as well (2 birds : 1 stone)
Burp Clothes (we use the swaddles)
Receiving Blankets (we use the swaddles)
